The Hauntingly Excellent Range

Thomas Hopkinson

In 1817, Thomas Hopkinson was involved in an arson attack at South Wingfield, where hay and corn stacks were set ablaze. Arrested with four others, he escaped execution by turning King’s evidence and testifying against his accomplices who were all hanged.

Two years later, in 1819, Hopkinson showed that he hadn’t learned the error of his ways - this time committing highway robbery near Dronfield, assaulting and robbing traveller William Bucknall.

Caught and tried at the Derby Assizes, he was found guilty and sentenced to death.

On 2 April 1819, Hopkinson was publicly hanged outside Derby Gaol, his earlier reprieve proving short-lived.

Hopkinson’s ghost is said to haunt Friar Gate - specifically where he was executed there.
