The Derby Hippodrome opened on 20th July 1914 with a packed-out auditorium watching the opening show 'September Morn'. The theatre would ultimately go on to produce 1,158 live programmes in two periods from 1914 to 1930 and 1950 to 1959, operating as a cinema in between times.

In this fascinating softcover book - first written in the mid 90s - John M. Taylor looks at not just the history of the Hippodrome but the people and personalities that contributed to its story, both on stage and behind the scenes, and brings to us a deeply personal examination of a truly iconic Derby location.

Written with love, passion, and humour, John takes us on a journey from the Hippodrome's beginnings from over a century ago to its current uncertain situation.
