The Hauntingly Excellent Range
PC Joseph Moss
In July 1879, PC Joseph Moss, a 26-year-old officer in the Derby Borough Police and former Grenadier Guard, was fatally shot while on duty in Derby.
Moss - alongside two other policemen - had pursued and confronted Gerald Mainwaring and Annie Green, who had caused a drunken disturbance with a pony-and-trap in Derby. During their arrest at the Police Lock-Up in Derby, Mainwaring drew a revolver, shooting Moss, who died the following day.
Mainwaring was tried for wilful murder and attempted murder, with the jury delivering a guilty verdict amid controversy over a split jury and the use of drawing lots to decide a jury foreman who would put in a casting vote. Due to this controversy the Home Secretary commuted Gerald's death sentence to life imprisonment, and he was released around 15 years later.
PC Moss’s ghost is said to haunt the site of the old Police Lock-Up.

CONNECTION: Derby Fish Market stands where the original Police Lock-Up once stood in Derby. The Lock-Up contained a charge room and it's own cells. These cells were often used when accused criminals were on trial if the trial was being held in the Guildhall in Derby. The cells were linked by a tunnel to the Guildhall itself, enabling the accused to be taken into court without taking them outside and increasing the chances of them absconding.
