Derby Crime & Punishment Museum

Derby has a powerful and often untold history of crime, justice and punishment, with stories that deserve to be experienced, not just read. That is why we are aiming to create the Derby Crime and Punishment Museum - a bold, story-led attraction rooted in real events from Derby and Derbyshire.
Our intention is not to create a traditional museum of static displays, but an immersive environment where history is brought to life through compelling storytelling, interactive interpretation and atmospheric design. From infamous local cases to the everyday realities of law and order, the museum will place visitors at the heart of the past.
Our motivation is to make this history accessible to everyone. Too often, important local stories remain hidden or feel out of reach. We want to change that by presenting them in a way that is engaging, memorable and meaningful.
Our aim is to create an experience that is interactive, immersive and emotive, combining free core access with optional paid elements such as escape rooms, mock trials and guided walks. This approach ensures both accessibility and long-term sustainability.
We are currently seeking funding to progress a pilot project that will allow us to test, refine and demonstrate the concept of a Derby Crime and Punishment Museum. This phase will focus on developing a pop-up exhibition, delivering free workshops and public engagement activity, and trialling immersive elements such as an escape room experience based on a real Derby event from the past. It will also enable consultation with local audiences and stakeholders, ensuring the project is shaped by the community it is intended to serve while building a strong evidence base for future development.
Upon successful completion of the pilot project, we will then be seeking further funding to deliver the full museum. This next phase will transform the concept into a permanent, high-quality visitor attraction, expanding the immersive experiences, interpretation and facilities to create a fully realised, sustainable cultural destination for Derby.
